Why the Attacks in India Should Surprise Nobody
by Deena Guzder
*Of course, the rulers of this planet will never show “genuine concern”
for the poor (Obama never uttered the words “poor people” during the
campaign, to my knowledge).
But I’ve never really understood why they can’t suss that their
rapaciousness isn’t in their own interests … that by tossing a few
crumbs to us masses, they could maintain their position in perpetuity.
Most folks really don’t care for freedom … the right to control their
own lives. They do want to be free from want … to have enough for
themselves and their families that they aren’t staring hunger and death
in the eye when they awake each morning.
It would be little enough to grant us that. Power would remain in the
hands of the few … a little “enlightened self-interest” would make
that power all the more secure, don’t you think?
But that’s not how their mindset works … and I’m damned (as are we
all) if I know why.
Now, to be clear, I think that would be a horrible world to inhabit …
just less awful than the status quo. And maybe if people had more, we’d
be more inclined to want the freedom and equality we’re denied.
(I seem to be switching from “we” to “they” and back, don’t I? I guess
that’s indicative of my tenuous association with the rest of humanity.)
So maybe that’s it … The Powers That Be can’t figure out which is
better for them: grinding us under the heels of their bejeweled
jackboots, or engaging in a bit of “benevolent despotism”.
And being the conservative sort, they’ll go with what’s worked pretty
well so far.
Nah … they’re just sadistic futhamuckas who get their jollies off of
others’ pain and despair. Only thing that makes sense from an empirical
standpoint … don’t you think?
We’ll just have to content ourselves with the knowledge that once the
climate shit fully hits the fan, they can’t ditch this rock any more
than we can.
And since there won’t be anything we can do to stop it, we might as well
just laugh our collective asses off over the fact that they’re finally
in the same sinking boat with the rest of us.
As the song goes:
It’s the end of the world as we know it, and I feel fine.

You’re Scaring Me, Obama: Let the Bush Years Die
by Heather Wokusch
*It seems to me there a number of “progressive” responses to the new
admin.
There are the MoveOn Kool-Aid drinkers who think Obama’s Jesus on a
stick.
There are those who are also infatuated with him, but think he’s getting
“bad advice” … and believe they can appeal to his “better angels”.
There are those who think he has “good instincts”, but needs to be
pushed by grassroots pressure.
And there are a few, like me, who see him essentially as Slippery
William without a paunch, and empirically expect him … given his
Senate record, how he ran his campaign, and his actions since election
… to behave as the Demorat that he is.
I wonder how the young’uns are going to react when they discover the
clay feet at the base of their icon. It could be a painful, but
imperative, lesson in hero worship and the cult of personality.
Or they may just friggin’ ignore the contradictions, and make merry with
their lesser evil.
Or evil lesser … either works, I guess.
We might be doomed even if he has some “Saul on the road to Damascus”
redemptive experience (Care to place odds on that happening?), and uses
his powers to end the bloodsoaked policies of American history (which
long predate the Shrubberite Kingdom) and deal seriously (dead
seriously) with the looming end of the world as we know it.
We’re certainly doomed if he’s Clinton 2.0.
It ain’t looking good, is it?

Obama’s Historic Victory
by Howard Zinn
*I think Zinn’s being unwarrantedly optimistic about the possibility of
moving the new gummint to do what needs to be done.
I’m not saying it *can’t* happen. In fact, it *has* to happen. But it
almost certainly *won’t* happen.
I hope to hell I’m wrong … I’ve been sadly right (no great feat, I
admit) too many times before.

A Better Election Next Time?
*Don’t hold your breath that ensuring every vote counts will be a top
priority of the incoming administration.
Why? If the Demorats ignored this issue when they lost, why the hell
would they care about it when they won?
Forget defending democracy … you’d think self-interest would dictate
it, wouldn’t you?
Well, you have to look deeper to suss what their actual self-interest
is.
Winning isn’t everything, folks … keeping the system running is.
Losing teams don’t want to reform the league, do they? They play by the
rules of the game.
I suck at analogies.

prohibition.
But I’d certainly be open to hearing a reasoned argument for the right
