*This isn’t a matter of “incorporating the lessons learned from Fukushima”, unless those lessons lead to the end of nuclear power.

No matter how many “safety enhancements” are implemented, the prospect of a nuclear disaster will always hang over us like a sword of Damacles.

Nukes are unsafe, and unnecessary.

Every politician and public official shilling for them is in direct violation of their oath of office to protect the public welfare, and were there any justice in this world, they would be serving appropriate sentences for what can only be termed criminal negligence, at best.

Afghan War Just Needs a Better Sales Pitch

*Certainly there is a strategy to defend, and I’d hope to hell that if Americans really understood what their country was doing there, they’d condemn it.

I can dream.

What’s being called for here is known more familiarly as “propaganda”, and the administration has engaged in it on a daily basis.  At this point, however, support for its claimed aims in Afghanistan isn’t its focus.  The massive intervention tack has been tried, and found wanting, and now the goal is to create the conditions for a permanent presence under the auspices of a compliant “independent” government.

Its true goals of the realization of the TAPI pipeline, and geostrategic dominance of the region, remain unchanged.

“Terrorism” is the boogeyman.

And in the empire game, you can’t boogie without a boogeyman.

Healthcare Debate: As Supreme Court Hears Landmark Case, Does Law Do Enough to Fix Health Crisis?

*With tens of thousands dying each year due to unaffordable and inadequate coverage, we don’t have time to “build on” this steaming pile of horse manure, do we?

This is way the system works.  When it can’t completely block some level of reform, it forces us to choose either to take the crumbs tossed on the floor, or reject them in the hope of one day having a seat at the dining table.

If we give a damn about all those who would be left behind by this “compromise”, then the choice is clear, isn’t it?

Pentagon Stays Silent on Whether Suspect in Afghan Massacre Took Controversial Anti-Malaria Drug

*Another example of the military industrial complex – in this instance, the pharmaceutical industry.

Regardless of its connection to this latest massacre, this drug should have been yanked the moment indications of its side effects arose, if not barred from ever being used, as I imagine there were questions from the outset.

Yet not only was it given to military and Peace Corps members, but it was given to Roche to profit off of the misery it produced.

And that corruption and immorality is what US troops are truly fighting for, isn’t it?

FAIR Extra!
Journalists Rock! Journalism Sucks!
Why media activists should love the players and hate the game
by Robert Jensen

*I think there’s a legitimate difference between how we should view reporters and teachers.

Teachers are being besieged by those in power.  Journalists aren’t.

(At least as long as they do what’s expected of them.)

I don’t put teachers on a pedestal, but I support their struggle to simply have the tools they need to do their job, which are being stripped from them with each privatizing, union-busting piece of legislation that’s passed.

I agree, though, that we have to look beyond the individuals to the evils in the system itself.  It’s the same principle involved with the deposing of dictators without ridding the nation of the regime they headed.

In this case, chopping off the head doesn’t kill the body, does it?

But I do think it’s entirely appropriate to question corpress reporters, even as they question us.  Not aggressively, not in a hostile manner, but persistently and as a way to educate them, assuming they can be.

(And some can.  Not many, I’d imagine, but some.)

Perhaps that could come off as arrogant, but it’s not about what *we* say, it’s about empiricism.  We should tell them to not take our word for it – or the word of those opposed to us.  Do what your training supposedly taught you, and find out the facts for yourself.

If you’re not willing to do that, you’re not really a journalist, are you?

DEMOCRACY NOW!
“How to Survive a Plague”: As ACT UP Turns 25, New Film Chronicles History of AIDS Activism in U.S.

*I don’t consider this a “primer” for activism, even as I acknowledge the gains made.

I think it comes down to what you want to achieve.  It appears the goal here was to break through the barriers of fear and bias and bureaucracy to allow for research to move forward on lifesaving drugs.

In that, the movement was successful.  But as stated, millions still die every year, and while that’s lamented, there doesn’t seem to be the same energy and effort to make these drugs available to everyone.

It’s a classic half-measure, as so many “victories” have been.  And half-measures are taken when there isn’t a true sense of solidarity across the lines that divide us, when empathy is on a short leash.

So while these gains have been hard won and of immense benefit, many have been left behind, and I think that can be ascribed to a failure to envision what true justice should look like, and that in turn is a failure to honor the obligations inherent in a fealty to a fully realized sense of humanity.

NAACP’s Ben Jealous: Justice for Trayvon Martin Begins with Killer’s Arrest, Police Chief’s Ouster

*I’m not sure where Jealous is coming from on the matter of this law.  Regardless of how it’s interpreted, it will continue to result in unjustified death and injury.  It gives license to escalating to the most lethal form of “self-defense”, and that can’t help but lead to tragedy.

And I really don’t give a rat’s ass about what Sean Hannity has to say.  He’s making political calculations, and Jealous is aiding and abetting his machinations by essentially saying, “Look, even Sean Hannity’s on our side”, I suppose as a way to indicate the breadth of the repulsion toward the handling of this case.

If that’s the situation, it’s an extremely foolish thing to do, as it simply provides cover for someone who should be seen as your mortal enemy.

5 Freedom-Killing Tactics Police Will Use to Crack Down on Protests in 2012
by Steven Rosenfeld

*No, fascism isn’t here yet.

But the police state is to a significant degree, and in truth has always been when deemed necessary to protect privilege and keep designated “others” in line.

One thing that struck me was the lack of any discussion of what happens when protesters go beyond “peaceful” action.  The assumption seems to be that activists are willing to play by the rules, provided they are “fair and reasonable”.

But that begs the question of even if that were the case, would such actions be more that a sort of pantomime of protest.  At some point it has to be realized that just showing up, even en masse, isn’t enough, and that truly direct action will need to be taken, if the slogans are to be taken seriously.

I think what it comes down to is that no matter what the rules are, there will be a moral requirement to go beyond them.

What happens then?  Is part of the security state strategy to divide and conquer by inducing civil liberties’ groups to focus on fighting these draconian policies against peaceful protest, which perforce delegitimizes actions beyond that?

I don’t know.  And I don’t mean to trivialize the stakes for pushing past the SOP of signs, speeches and marches.

I just know that it will have to be done, and it needs to be discussed intelligently and respectfully among all those who claim justice as their holy grail.

by John LaForge

*Karzai’s warning contains the same false premise spouted by many “anti-war” activists.  The Western “presence” can’t “change from a force that is fighting terrorism to a force that is fighting against the people of Afghanistan.”

That’s been its nature from the beginning.

These atrocities are only symptoms of the overarching evil of imperialism, a term I use without apology.

It is what it is, and the pretense that somehow the goal is laudable but the methods can be immoral or merely flawed obscures the visceral inhumanity at its core.

Do Afghans Love Their Holy Book More Than Their Kids?

*It’s sickeningly ironic that the corpress suddenly focuses on the value of life in Afghanistan after spending a decade promoting its denigration and destruction, don’t you think?

“Human life is cheap” has been their mantra from the beginning.

And shouldn’t it be clear, after over 200 years of empirical evidence, that the US doesn’t give a good goddamn about the “hearts and minds” of those it seeks to “liberate” (or in an earlier imperial era, “civilize”) …

DEMOCRACY NOW!
Afghan Massacre Sheds Light on Culture of Mania and Aggression in U.S. Troops in Afghanistan

*Another of what I’d call an “NPR lite” piece from DN!, with a mainstream reporter giving his blinkered and biased view of the matter at hand, without being challenged by the hosts.

Here, the assumption is that this behavior is somehow not desired by the brass, which flies in the face of how troops have treated civilians for centuries, beginning with the members of Native nations, which went far beyond the current horrors into the realm of genocide.

“Hearts and minds” has the same meaning in reality as it did in ‘Nam.  It’s a PR strategy, a sham to maintain the farce of “democracy promotion”.

This is what the military, and its civilian leadership, want.  They will dangle a few pathetic carrots in front of the occupied population, but woe be unto any who might reject their largesse, or anyone who simply gets in the way, or is in the vicinity when soldiers just want to “kick some raghead ass”.

That’s how you control a population, according to military SOP.

To believe anything else is to deny history and the literally bleeding obvious.  Shea, as most every other mainstream journalist, is quite accomplished at doing so, and it appears Goodman and Gonzalez are content to let them propound that narrative.

Afghan Massacre: After Losing Homes in NATO Attacks, Victims Moved Near U.S. Base Hoping for Safety

I can’t help but wonder if it’s positioning itself as a “responsible” alternative outlet that will step in to fill the void left by the funding cuts to public broadcasting news programs.  That’s not backed by any hard evidence, but it does seem to fit with the guests and angles taken in many segments.

I Don’t Want To See Their Faces; I Don’t Want To Hear Them Scream
by Christopher Cooper

I sent this to the author:

Christopher

Thank you.

You put into righteously vicious words what I felt when I opened the paper this morning, but only slightly more so than every other morning for the past forty years or so, as this is SOP for the empire, isn’t it?

I consider myself someone who tries to do the right thing, the moral thing, acknowledging how miserably I fail, and to anyone who wants to go all Gandhian on your ass and admonish you for expressing what you and I and hopefully many others feel, I have to say …

Get schtupped.

There’s a time for forebearance and forgiveness, and a time for giving vent to the visceral instinct which is righteous wrath.  Both are legitimate expressions of our humanity.

But how anyone can witness this fully concentrated distillation of what “The Greatest Nation in the History of the Earth” ™ is all about at bottom, and feel anything but blind rage, is beyond my admittedly limited capacity to comprehend.

Or my admittedly limited desire to care.

That rage is our soul – or whatever you want to call it – on fire.  It’s giving a shit about the rest of the poor dumb (gender neutral) bastards on this rock.

And it’s the only thing standing in the way of a world consumed by the greed and malevolence that led to this atrocity, and the next one, and the next.

So, again, thank you.

Afghan Massacre: Peace Groups Call for U.S. Withdrawal After Army Sergeant Kills 16 Afghan Civilians

*Kelly puts this in perspective.

This is not an aberration to US and NATO policy.  It is the logical result of the policy.

And these logical results occur on a daily basis.

And the bodies pile up.

Even as the endorsements by “liberals” and “progressives” for the manager of this policy pile up.

This goes far beyond a moral disconnect, to a complete moral meltdown of what these people proclaim to be their principles.

Seemingly persuasive arguments can be made for “pragmatism”, but in the end, we can’t avoid the inescapable conclusion:

“Peace and justice” never stood a chance.

Don’t you think that should be Job One for anyone covering this horror show?  And yet how many times have you seen, heard or read reference to these?

If you don’t know the ends of empire, you can’t know how to get to the end of empire.

Fukushima Should Compel All Countries to Discard Nuclear Energy
by Amitabh Pal

*I wouldn’t say Obama’s energy policy has been “all over the map”.

There have been some of what I’d call feints in the direction of clean

Baby, Drill” fueled by a few less steroids.

And those green projects in large measure are sops to corporate
producers and constructors who have the same proclivity for
profiteering as their dirty fuel cohorts.

As always, the “green” that carries the day is the one with the serial numbers.

U.S. Faces Challenge to “Drug War” as Latin American Countries Mull Decriminalization, Legalization

*Don’t you have to ask whether the US really wants to end the violence and misery that is the product of “The War on Drugs” ™?

Ask who benefits from that policy, and what it would mean to them to have drugs decriminalized or legalized.  Law enforcement, the prison-industrial complex, and politicians who capitalize on defending the status quo and demonizing “the other” (promoting the fallacy that drug abuse is primarily a lower class ‘black and brown’ problem) all would lose out if reason and humanity were to prevail.

I’d have liked to have seen that angle explored here.

Sandra Fluke Controversy: Distraction or Revelation?

*The irony is that you have the Democrats “championing” women’s rights in order to capitalize on this “gift”, and the genesis of all this is Dear Misleader’s capitulation to bogus claims of the denial of “religious freedom” through his “compromise” on reproductive healthcare.

And irony upon irony, mainstream women’s groups like NOW proclaim this as a “victory”, as they gear up to back his re-election campaign.

(See here for why this wasn’t a “win-win”:  http://www.accuracy.org/release/obama-contraception-compromise-barrier-to-access-fostering-unequal-attitudes/)

Here’s an scenario, which I think plausible, but have no empirical evidence to back up.

Obama met with Catholic bishops a few months back, yet he didn’t make this “compromise” at that time.

Why?

Perhaps he wanted this “controversy” so that he could offer his “eminently reasonable” solution, knowing full well it would be rejected by the bishops and anti-choice crowd in general, and thus he would be seen as having been willing to address their objections, but was spurned in his attempt at “accommodation”.

Points for “willing to go halfway”, and votes for doing so “without harming women’s rights”.

Limbaugh’s horseshit is an unexpected windfall for the strategy.

It’s a theory, anyway.

(I think I may have set the record for quote marks.  I’ll have to check.)

BP to Pay $7.8B to Settle Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill Lawsuit. Is it a Bad Deal for Gulf Residents?

*The two things that I think are paramount here are the fact that even if the settlement were much larger, justice can’t be seen to be done as long as no one from BP or any of the other perps see prison time.  This was a crime scene, and the crimes will continue until the punishment fits them.

But beyond that, even if drilling could be done safely, this is ultimately about the impact on this planet.  As with the XL pipeline, even if not another drop of oil was spilled, the continued rapaciousness of BP, Shell, TransCanada et al. – aided and abetted by our government – will surely sign our death warrant.
