DEMOCRACY NOW!
In Civil Rights Victory, Virginia Restores Voting Rights for Hundreds of Thousands Nonviolent Felons

*So, what about those who were convicted of violent crimes?

Other than a cryptic comment from Jealous that may be about violent crimes, or maybe just about drug crimes classified as violent, this isn’t addressed, is it?

When Goodman says that Virginia is one of only four states to not automatically restore voting rights, I imagine she means to those convicted of non-violent felonies, but that’s not really clear, is it?

The point is that once someone has served their sentence, all their rights should be restored to them, regardless of the nature of the offense for which they were convicted.

And I have to look askance at this commitment to “redemption” on the part of those who push for and implement the policies that place so many in prison who have no business being there.

Their principles are flexible to point of being flaccid, don’t you think?

97% Global Warming Consensus Meets Resistance from Scientific Denialism
The robust climate consensus faces resistance from conspiracy theories, cherry picking, and misrepresentations
by Dana Nuccitelli

*While this paper may have received some modest corpress attention, the role of the mainstream media in giving credence to climate denial in their attempts at a false “balance” is perhaps the major factor in the public’s ignorance of the scientific consensus.

Though that may be changing to some degree, as the facts slap us in the face with each “natural” disaster, corpress “objectivity” and silence on the issue previously has dangerously delayed public support for dealing with this threat to our very survival.

DEMOCRACY NOW!
Chicago to Shutter 50 Public Schools: Is Historic Mass Closure an Experiment in Privatization?

*What can you call this but bipartisan buggery?

The children of the poor and working class, which grow daily as more of the middle class slip down the income ladder, are to be funneled into service and manual labor jobs, the door to anything better slammed in their faces, while the funds for a quality education line the pockets of the privatizers.

This is class warfare

And it’s a rout right now.

The union actions in Chicago, and those against useless and counterproductive testing in Seattle, are hopeful signs, along with other isolated resistance, but we’re far from the mass organizing necessary to overturn this evisceration of education.

That can only come from a grand alliance among students, parents, teachers and all those who believe in the right to knowledge and understand its profound relationship to our humanity.

Knowledge is power

Which is why those who have power want to keep it from us

And why we have to fight for it.

Obama Taps Billionaire Fundraiser Penny Pritzker for Commerce Despite Anti-Labor, Subprime Legacy

*The headline says “Despite”

But can’t a case be made that that should be amended to “in Recognition of”?

Of course, there will be little recognition of her crimes in the corpress or among the political elites, but the submerged subtext makes plain that persons like Pritzker are to be rewarded, rather than exposed – or heaven forfend, prosecuted – for their turpitude.

It’s a requisite for their resumé.

Our Twisted Politics of Grief
In the “endless war,” some kinds of grief are more useful than others
by Norman Solomon

*It’s not a matter of “end[ing] terrorism by terrorizing others”, is it?

It’s a matter of engendering it.

And we need to always be cognizant of just why the US terrorizes other peoples.

It’s not because they’re Muslims, or dark skinned, or foreigners, although the element of xenophobia is undeniably extant.

It’s because the empire has decided that it wants something, and they present an impediment to its acquisition of it.

What an Anonymous U.S. Official Says About Iranians in Syria

*Whether the FSA actually believes there’s an Iranian presence is debatable.

It’s in their interest to put out such a line, whether they think it’s true or not, isn’t it?

Time will tell where this fits on that spectrum.

Apple’s Empty Tax Argument

*No, labor didn’t start this class war.

That’s the problem, isn’t it? That’s why these corps have such power.

It’s why they even exist.

Most labor “leaders” work hand in glove with the likes of Clinton and Obama to make sure the system runs smoothly

For those who run it.

They posture about “workers’ rights”, while doing nothing of consequence to prevent their erosion, fulfilling their function of constricting dissent, and creating the illusion of some counterbalance to plutocracy.

But you shall know them by the stench of their fetid fruits.

DEMOCRACY NOW!
After 3 Trials, Memphis Prisoner Timothy McKinney Wins Freedom by Pleading Guilty to Crime He Denies

*The state doesn’t give a damn about justice for the victim. It wants a conviction, and any black man will do.

Bastards like Harris and Henderson should be charged with murder if their actions lead to the death of an innocent person, or one who was denied a fair trial and executed, and with lesser appropriate charges in any case that deprives such persons of their liberty due to their duplicity.

Other than Honorable: Army Strips Benefits of Wounded Veterans by Kicking Them Out for Misconduct

*This doesn’t have a goddamn thing to do with “downsizing”, other than the fact that the military would rather spend billions on unnecessary weaponry than take care of these shattered soldiers.

And the politicians screaming about “hollowing out the Defense Department” are silent on this, aren’t they?

That’s because, unlike weapons manufacturers, these people can’t fill their campaign coffers every election cycle.

The empire spits out its used cannon fodder once they can no longer serve its needs.

And all the pious proclamations on “honoring the troops” can’t conceal that injustice, can they?

*This is a moving piece, as are the others I’ve read from Kelly and VCNV over the years about the horrors empire has inflicted on these people.

But I’m always at a loss as to why that “choice” of war is never explained.

It was not for “justice”

And it was not for “revenge”

And only the willfully blind can say it was for “democracy” and “the liberation of women”.

It was for what empires always seek

Wealth and power.

If they had done their journalistic duty in the first place, revealing the sins of the powerful to the people, there would never have been the political climate that has made this possible.

Thoreau’s Radicalism and the Fight Against the Fossil-Fuel Industry
What would it mean if we were to walk in his footsteps?
by Wen Stephenson

*The question of the use of force is never an easy one, but it is also one that can’t be answered by exalting nonviolence to the pinnacle of principle, superceding even the commitment to justice.

I believe we have a right to defend ourselves, by, in Malcolm X’s words, “any means necessary”.

As with any right, there come responsibilities. Force must be, if not a last resort, one that isn’t employed without deep deliberation as to the consequences.

People bleed. People die. That is the consequence of violence.

The question is whether that sin, or whatever you wish to call it, outweighs the sin of not doing what is necessary to achieve a just world, or a livable one.

If we say that it doesn’t, how do we exercise that right?

It must be disciplined. It must be principled.

Given our often tentative grasp on humanity, perhaps that is beyond our capabilities. Has such restraint ever been evinced in the context of a mass struggle?

And yet, as Thoreau, I can’t accept that under extreme circumstances, a greater morality somehow precludes its use.

To posit the opposite, I believe, is to subordinate our purpose to our perceived purity.

Killing Civilians Is a More Popular Than You’d Think–Especially Among Pundits

*Mere supposition on my part, but I think the lopsided numbers for American Muslims may be a defensive reaction to how they’re falsely portrayed, rather than evidence of their being that much more opposed to terrorism, from any source. It might be interesting to see if the results held for Muslims outside the West, who in general haven’t been subjected to the same sort of vilification in their own countries.

It’s a terribly constructed question, though. What does “Depends” mean? Under what circumstances are killing civilians “sometimes” justified?

I can conceive of an extreme hypothetical situation in which I might answer in the affirmative, as a lesser evil and as an absolute last resort, but that is wholly disconnected from how the killing of civilians occurs in reality

Or how that action is blessed by the corpress, when it is perpetrated by our government.

As U.S. Moves to Arm Syrian Rebels, Questions Raised About Reports of Chemical Weapons Attack

*It doesn’t matter how people are killed, does it?

By gas, by bullet, or by explosion, dead is dead.

I don’t know what the answer is

But I do know what it isn’t.

Any action that’s controlled by the US or those doing its bidding will never lead to a positive outcome for the Syrian people.

How many times does history have to repeat itself for that lesson to be learned?

*Inspiring

But can you spot the missing hegemon?

I knew that you could.

Addendum:

There were numerous May Day actions in these here United States, some relatively large, such as in LA, which also highlighted immigrant rights, as did other rallies and marches.

But I think the overarching point holds, that labor is woefully unorganized and badly served by many union “leaders”.
