Juror B29 Says Zimmerman “Got Away with Murder,” Intensifying Scrutiny of Prosecution & Florida Laws

*I’m not clear on some of what Iyer’s saying regarding legal issues, but what I keep coming back to is that Zimmerman forced the situation, confronted Martin, and whatever occurred happened because of the former’s actions.

Does an armed robber have a right to kill his victim if they fight back, and he feels he’s in imminent danger of death or severe injury?

Zimmerman made a decision based at least in part on Martin’s race, and he acted on that decision. Whatever he thought of Martin’s intent, there was no reasonable cause to believe Martin posed a threat to him or anyone else.

Given that, he is clearly guilty of some crime, as his unreasonable actions led to the death of another. I’m not sure just what the charge should be – negligent homicide, manslaughter or whatever – but he put himself, and Martin, in that position, and he should be held legally responsible for doing so.

But wouldn’t we be prudent in asking just who among “the new breed of small government conservatives” is participating in the same sort of dog and pony show today?

I think his optimism over this bipartisan alliance could prove premature, and that we should be skeptical of many of those on both sides of the aisle who claim outrage, demanding words align with deeds.

And in the end, the efforts of those outside the halls of power are what will prove decisive in the struggle to slice off the tentacles of the metastasizing police state.

What It Takes to Get a Reporter to Correct An Error

*I’m surprised Scahill, and Hart, don’t question Baldwin’s characterization of Al-Awlaki as a “terrorist”, given that the term implies operational involvement, which has never been proven, only alleged.

The government’s own guidelines for assassination make a distinction between operational and propaganda activities. That distinction is essentially cosmetic, of course, but it is made, and for that not to be acknowledged here is disturbing.

And it should be said that even were Al-Awlaki engaged in the former, that would not have justified his extrajudicial execution, regardless of his nationality.

Mining Company Deploys More Masked Militiamen Against “Eco-Terrorists”
by Kate Sheppard
Mother Jones

*The Walker – sorry, Wisconsin – State Journal’s been spinning this lately, giving full credence to GTAC’s claim of “necessary defense” from “violent protest”.

Here’s video of the incident in question

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q3oYhkyf_MU

“Violent”? “Assault”? “Terrorism”?

Newspeak in excelsis, wouldn’t you say?

We’re talking being yelled at, some minor property damage, blocking the cops from arriving, and a tussle over a camera that was taken. Supposedly some hyperbolic death threats were made online by a person or persons who may not be connected to the protests.

That amounts to “terrorism”, apparently.

It’s telling that the WSJ hasn’t quoted anyone on the other side of this incident. They did quote a Democratic legislator who, while opposed to the storm troopers, called the Earth Firsters “idiots”.

You can question whether this is strategically and tactically intelligent, but painting these folks as dangerous is ludicrous, and it will no doubt influence the outcome of the case against the protester who struggled with the employee over the camera.

All the news that’s printed to fit, as they say.

On His 95th Birthday, the Story of Nelson Mandela’s Struggle Told Outside His Old Soweto Home

*It seems Ngwane wants to criticize Mandela and the ANC more than he does, and he does make a telling observation at the end about broken promises, but he appears constrained by this hagiography of Mandela that will grow particularly intense during these birthday celebrations, and upon his death.

This isn’t to say the man’s a fraud. The fact is, I and many others don’t know the full history of his contributions and betrayals, and that’s not likely to change due to the efforts of the alternative establishment media in the US, is it?

What I can say is that the appraisal of any “leader”, “beloved” or not, must be utterly honest

But insist on it.

The Forever Conflict: Will America’s War on Terror Ever End at Home?
by Alex Kane

*There’s another “institutional reason” left out of this.

Those who control the institution of capitalism – the exploitocracy – are keenly aware of what the future holds, as they squeeze every drop of profit out of the sweat of workers, and the blood of everyone else not of their class, while that institution devours the resources and diseases the land, air and water of this planet.

They know that their only hope for maintaining their position lies in the creation of the 21st century police state.

“Terrorism” is their cloak

And surveillance and repression their daggers.

Expanding the dead-end debate over abortion
by Robert Jensen

*There is a profound moral question as to when life begins, and I agree that it has been avoided by pro choice advocates, and I don’t believe it has furthered the fulfillment of our goals to do so.

But I don’t think it’s possible to have an honest and fruitful discussion about that issue with those who loudly proclaim the rights of a fetus

But are silent on, or actively work to deny, the rights of a child, once born, to a decent life.

Doesn’t that describe most of those who wave the “pro life” banner?

And I think it’s readily apparent that if males had ovaries

There wouldn’t be a “pro life” movement, would there?

Until those hypocrisies are renounced

I can’t see the conditions for a constructive dialogue.

However, those who support the right to choose should be forthrightly dealing with it within our own circles.

Contradictions remain, regardless of whether we acknowledge them.
