NFL Reaches Settlement with Former Players Who Suffer from Brain Injuries, Alzheimer’s, Depression

*I played in high school, and to my knowledge never suffered any head injuries, so I count myself as extremely lucky.

And I’ve watched football for close to the entirety of my life, for at least a half century, and I enjoy the athleticism on display, as well as the drama, and, sadly, at one point these selfsame collisions, though I didn’t wish to see anyone hurt.

But I have to ask myself if I should continue to do so. I realize refraining won’t impact the situation, as I will never pay to go to or watch a game, but it isn’t simply a matter of agency, is it? I would be choosing to view an inherently dangerous activity, and what does that say about my sense of morality?

If the game can’t be played safely, it must be outlawed, at least at the younger levels. Adults, if not coerced, and fully cognizant of the risks, can make their own decisions, as irrational as they may be, but children and teenagers have to be protected from the damage playing can inflict on their lives.

Football is a microcosm of capitalism. It’s violent and inhuman, and seeks to provide spectacle to dull our consciences’ reaction to its nature.

*Another segment that, to my mind, is largely a waste of time.

Branch doesn’t make a great deal of sense to me in much of what he says, and he “tiptoes” around calling Dear Misleader out for what he is.

And I don’t know all the factors involved in King’s decision in Birmingham, but on its face it appears to be a callous one, placing children in that danger.

Civil Rights Pioneer Gloria Richardson, 91, on How Women Were Silenced at 1963 March on Washington

*Poor transcription may play a part, but there’s a lot that isn’t clear in this segment, and given its importance, you’d like to think Goodman would have tried to clarify matters.

What I think you can take from this is the truism that pedestals are inherently unstable objects, with a propensity for toppling over on those gathered in admiration around them.

We can admire acts of conscience and courage

But we must be wary of making icons out of those who commit them, for they often only comprise a part of the story.

Syrian Activist on Ghouta Attack: “I Haven’t Seen Such Death in My Whole Life”

*I think Cockburn has a good grip on the situation, part of which is to say that there is no good grip to be had.

If this occurred, to me it doesn’t change the equation. The Syrian government and many of the rebel formations have committed heinous crimes, and I don’t see that there’s a difference in how people are killed.

What is certain is that foreign intervention from any quarter, beyond what is already happening, will only make matters worse, if history is to be given credence.

This is in large measure a proxy war, and the people of Syria have paid a terrible price for it.

Bradley Manning: “Sometimes You Have to Pay a Heavy Price to Live in a Free Society”

*It’s not a matter of comparing sentences, no matter how egregiously unjust that reveals Manning’s to be.

He should not be serving any sentence for doing what his oath of duty, and far beyond that, his conscience, demanded.

His actions merit accolades, not opprobrium.

His remarks reveal the morality he acted upon, but his grasp of the reality of empire is lacking, in that he places US aggression in the context of reaction to being attacked, rather than comprehending the history that precipitated that attack, however inhuman and unjustifiable it was in its execution.

It’s not a matter of “becoming that which we condemn”.

Imperialism, the lust for wealth and power, is the original evil here, and we can never hope for true justice until that is fully understood.

*What Bales committed was an atrocity, a war crime, but he is one man, and his motivations for this horrific act are complex. How do you separate the warping of a soldier’s mind and conscience by combat from his hatred of “the other” and the dehumanization of his victims?

What is in no manner complicated is why he was in this situation, and the malevolent intent of those who placed him there.

They should be on trial. If there were any justice in this world, they would have been long ago

And there would be no need to ponder the path that led to this horror.

When the State Attacks Journalism

*There will be no outrage from the corpress.

Since this can’t be ignored, their function is to obfuscate, to make this a “controversy”, to confuse the public as to the nature of this assault on our rights

All to allow the government to go about its business, which is to construct the pillars of the police state, in anticipation of the coming meltdown of an unsustainable system.

It will be Gestapo 2.0, relying as much upon the manipulation of inculcated fears as those arising from the exercise of brutal force to achieve its ends.

And the media establishment will have played a central role in laying the groundwork for that nightmare.

Ahdaf Soueif: Amidst Egypt’s Bloodshed, “We Are Trying Keep the Discourse of the Revolution Alive”

*I’m not sure what “trap” the US is in. As stated toward the end regarding the release of Mubarak, things are essentially back to where they were when he was “our man”.

Other than a perception problem making plain the hypocrisy of US rhetoric about “freedom and democracy” – which it has had for a very long time among much of the world – and whatever problems the chaos and a possible civil war might pose for its economic and geostrategic interests, it seems to me the US has those in charge that they want in control of Egypt, and considers these the “cost of doing business”.

It will continue to call for “an end to the violence”, but it will work to strengthen the military’s grip as long as it is seen as the guarantor of the empire’s interests, don’t you think?

Facing 90 Years, Bradley Manning Expresses Regret for “Unintended Consequences” of Leaking Docs

*Whatever Manning’s motivation in presenting this defense, I think it’s obvious that it will be seized on by the government and corpress as evidence that his actions weren’t motivated by conscience.

He’ll either be portrayed, as he has been, as a traitor, or as a fucked up “pervert” who acted not according to his principles, but because he was mentally unstable.

It will be interesting to see how those who’ve steadfastly supported him react to this defense, and how it will be manipulated by the state and its media enablers.

FAIR Media Advisory
Defining Drone Deaths in Yemen
Media present dubious official claims as fact

*Leaving aside what constitutes an “imminent threat”

How someone contributes to that “imminent threat”

Whether a drone strike or other deadly action is the only way to avert that “imminent threat”

And the fact that the government that carries out these assassinations created the rationale for that “imminent threat”, and that there would be no “imminent threat” but for its own acts of terror

Does anyone believe that these actions would take place anywhere other than in a so-called “developing nation”?

Would a drone strike be ordered to deal with an “imminent threat” from Europe or Australia?

If a threat is so dire, why would it make any difference as to where it emanates from?

It should go without saying that the above are quintessentially rhetorical questions.

Black, Gay and a Pacifist: Bayard Rustin Remembered For Role in March on Washington, Mentoring MLK

2 For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again.
3 And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother’s eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?
4 Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye?
5 Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother’s eye.

Greenwald: Snowden “Doing Very Well” in Russia After Sparking “Extraordinary Debate” on NSA, Spying

Greenwald: Is U.S. Exaggerating Threat to Embassies to Silence Critics of NSA Domestic Surveillance?

*I’ve been saying that bastards like Wyden and Udall should say what they know, and defy the administration to prosecute them, but I didn’t realize that they actually have immunity, which shows just how hypocritical their silence has been, doesn’t it?

And I wished I shared Greenwald’s optimistic view of what has transpired over the last couple of months, but I’ve been around long enough to be skeptical of such analyses.

Of course, I hope that this does spark true transformation, not simply “reform”, but while it has had a visible impact outside the US, the spinmeisters in government and the corpress are in full damage control mode, and it remains to be seen just how this will all play out in this country.

But as always, we’re compelled to do what our conscience demands and our courage allows, regardless of the prospects for success.

Not Enough Debate in Morning Joe’s Walmart Wage Debate

*What sort of “living” can you do on $12.50 an hour, especially in DC, especially if you have to worry about more than just your own circumstances?

And why are we talking about a living wage

And not a life of dignity, one aspect of which is to be no one’s servant, beholden to them for your ability to survive?

Is that “impractical”, “unrealistic”?

If so, then let’s jettison all this lofty rhetoric about “justice” and “fairness”

And admit that we’re simply engaged in damage control.

Otherwise, let’s start walking the talk

And stepping toward a future we’ll feel no need to obscure.

Democracy Now!
Reps. Conyers & Massie on Bipartisan Campaign Against NSA Spying; Call for James Clapper to Resign

*Congress was never going to do shit about this, but Snowden forced their hand, and now some of them have made a political calculation that they have to appear to be outraged and seeking “reform” of this surveillance regime.

But it will survive, and flourish, because its raison d’etre is to suppress dissent in this country, and that will not be stayed.

The dog and pony show is designed to induce us to believe that our political system works, and we can all go back to our little lives and not have to work about Big Brother anymore.

But as things get progressively worse, we’ll see that facade crumble, and the police state will move out of the shadows, and into its overt role as “the savior of society”.

That is the only way those in power can maintain it

And they’re not about to give that up.

It’s up to us to clearly perceive that looming future

And forestall it.

NSA Confirms Dragnet Phone Records Collection, But Admits It Was Key in Stopping Just 1 Terror Plot

*Wyden can do more than “hint” about this.

He can tell what he knows, as Manning and Snowden have done.

How do you think the administration would deal with a senator blowing the whistle?

If Wyden truly cares about fulfilling his duty as a representative of the people

That’s precisely the question we need to have answered.

As for Church’s comments

The US doesn’t have to be a “tyranny”, in the totalitarian sense, to use this technology against us.

It already is.

And that was always the primary intent.
