Walmart and Downton Abbey: Rampant Inequality and Detachment from Reality

by Sadhbh Walshe

*So Walshe appears to be arguing for a more benevolent form of despotism, doesn’t she?

Those pitchforks would be put to better use in toiling for a “pragmatic”, self-interested overlord

US foreign policy is predicated on the contravention of international law.

The Pope Slams “Tyranny” of Capitalism and “Idolatry of Money,” But Opposes Shift on Women, Abortion

*You have to wonder why no unalloyed critic of the hypocrisy and collusion of the church with those in power appeared in this segment, don’t you?

I respect the work that Bourgeois has done over the decades, but it’s disappointing and disturbing that he doesn’t address the role Francis and the church during the “dirty war” in Argentina, merely stating that he knows about it and “lived” through it.

Likewise, there’s no mention of the Catholic hierarchy’s support for the repression in Honduras – especially galling given the fact that Bourgeois has been monitoring the situation there.

In the end, Francis’ words are as empty as Obama’s “populist” rhetoric, and only serve to mislead and give false hope to the faithful

Something religious “leaders” of every stripe have been adroit at for centuries.

FAIR Activism Update
CNN Doubles Down on Pro-Nuclear Bias
Answers petitions, critics, with more slanted commentary

*I don’t know bupkes about Bryk, but I certainly wouldn’t have chosen someone from NRDC, a comparative milquetoast on this matter, to represent the anti nuclear position.

Which is likely why CNN did.

Let’s just say Harvey Wasserman wasn’t waiting on their call.

Hansen’s idiocy presents something of a conundrum, in that so many climate advocates quote him as a preeminent authority on the subject, which he may well be, but if he’s so dead wrong, for whatever reason (I don’t know his connections to the nuclear industry), on nuclear power, as well as renewable energy, how can we trust his judgment on climate change?

Not that the veracity of the science is in any way dependent on his bona fides, but it does make for a rational contradiction, doesn’t it?

And how about those graphics in the accompanying image, taking the yellow and black signage signifying “DANGER”, and flipping it to direly warn of “THE FALLOUT FROM FEAR”?

Goebbels – and Madison Avenue – would be proud.

Leaked Memo Reveals U.S. Plan to Oppose Helping Poor Nations Adapt to Climate Change

*The thing is, if you don’t invest in the future

Typhoon Haiyan and Climate Change: Why ‘We Can’t Say for Sure’ Is Wrong

*To employ a sports analogy, if a quarterback throws a high number of interceptions, it may not be possible to attribute any particular one to poor judgment. The pressure he’s under, the actions of the receiver and/or the interceptor – even the weather – may be the primary factor for that one play.

But only bad decisions on his part can account for his continuing to throw interceptions.

And ignoring or discounting climate change, as corpress coverage encourages, is the most dangerous decision our species can make.

Senate Faces Historic Vote on Handling Military Sexually Assault Epidemic Outside Chain of Command

*It’s disturbing to hear Zierling say she wants the military to be able to do its “job” well, and that they shouldn’t be afraid of this change.

This isn’t about anything other than the culture of misogyny and machismo that permeates every aspect of military life.

That’s why the brass does fear anything that might impact that culture, because it is what militarism is all about.

Zierling’s message seems to be, “Let women be as effective agents of empire as men.”

As long as the basic principles of militarism exist, this will continue, and Zierling’s deluding herself to believe otherwise.

Sexual assault cases need to be taken entirely out of the military’s hands. This “independent body” will show itself to be susceptible to command influence, and while it may be better than what’s in place at present, it will be woefully inadequate as a guarantor of justice for every victim.

*Take it for what it’s worth, and I don’t know enough to say what validity to attach to it.

But I do think it’s foolish to posit that LBJ et alia were “convinced” that Castro was behind the assassination.

What possible motive would he have for doing so? Perhaps he found out about the plot against his life, and sought revenge?

Knowing the horrific consequences should he be found out, that beggars belief, doesn’t it?

And I think those “senior people in government” fully understood that.

So I don’t think that had diddley to do with the cover up.

And isn’t it interesting that Oliver Stone, when he talked about this on the program recently, didn’t mention the Mafia, other than a fleeting reference to Ruby’s involvement with them?

So what to believe?

The Stealthy Killer That Is Capitalism
by Paul Buchheit

*For all the undeniable facts preceding it, that concluding comment is emblematic of a nostalgia for a fairy tale of a time when there was supposedly some check on the rapacity of profiteers.

What there was was a realization by them that it was in their own best interest to toss some comparative crumbs to the masses, lest the bakery be stormed.

And, of course, many missed out on their largesse, even as they slaved under their lashes.

What we have today is a difference of degree, not kind. It’s just that white middle class folk are learning just how vicious the beast can be once its core characteristics compel it to consume all in its path

And, ultimately, itself.

So let’s please cease pretending that capitalism – whether of the Keynesian or “unregulated, free market” variety – has ever been about anything other than profit and power

And come to the understanding that our future lies in its death

Or ours.

*Societal control depends on fear – of punishment, and of each other.

A courageous commitment to justice, and to seeing our common humanity, is thus anathema to those in power.

I can’t go along with Hammond’s call to free all prisoners, given the certain harm that would result, although every case should be meticulously reviewed, the end result being that the vast majority could and should be released.

And the conditions for those who remain inside must meet a strict standard for humane treatment, for its own sake, as well as to facilitate their being able to return to us as whole a human being as possible.

But even with that caveat, I think Hammond’s acts and cleareyed perspective on just how the world works are worthy of emulation, if we can find both the courage and the wisdom to do so.

I don’t believe in “heroes”

But I do admire heroism.

Hammond has provided us with an inspiring example of just that.

The Untold Story of War: U.S. Veterans Face Staggering Epidemic of Unemployment, Trauma & Suicide

*I don’t know how you get from opposing wars of empire to reinstating the draft.

I understand Jones’ logic, that the public would have a more direct stake in the consequences of war, and consequently be less likely to acquiesce in them, but would that be an effective counter to the propaganda deployed in selling them?

I don’t think a draft would have much impact on the initial push for war, but it might, as in Vietnam, play a role in ending them sooner, should they prove a “failure”.

(And by that I mean political failure.

The moral failure is standard equipment.)

But is that sufficient reason to reinstate the draft?

Shouldn’t we instead be focused on educating each other about just why our nation goes to war, and who wins and who loses when we do?

I’d really like to ask Jones why she feels the existence of a draft is somehow complimentary to organizing against an imperial foreign policy, because I don’t think forcing more folks to fight and kill for corporations (and the poverty draft that accounts for so many recruits can hardly be characterized as “voluntary”) in order to undermine public support for war is an ethical way of accomplishing it.

*While I support the struggle for dignity, and respect the courage of these folks, I find it truly bizarre that one of the main points of emphasis is that by agreeing to these very modest demands (raising the question of just how much dignity would result), the company would make more money.

I suppose that’s considered good strategy

But to me it seems a tacit acquiescence in one’s own exploitation, albeit at a lesser level, than a railing against injustice.

Oliver Stone on 50th Anniversary of JFK Assassination & the Untold History of the United States

*I think Kuznick’s remark about hope for Obama is telling, in that knowing all that he and Stone know, they still were naive enough to believe the hype to some degree.

And that reflects on their view of Kennedy, I believe. They want to believe he was a “visionary”, and due to his murder, they can continue to believe that, because, unlike Obama, he could never “disappoint” them.

Now, it may be that Kennedy was a pragmatist, and realized the insanity of the militarists’ warmongering

But I think we’re talking about a matter of degree, not kind.

Kennedy, as all other presidents, was committed to “the American Century”, to US dominance, and didn’t shy from repression and deadly force in the pursuit of it.

But he knew that blind belligerence toward the USSR would lead to Armageddon, and thus no world to control.

That’s my interpretation, given what I’ve observed over a half century

And it will take someone less invested in “heroes” and grand storytelling to dissuade me from that assessment.

Part 3: Oliver Stone on His Visit to Jeju Island, NSA Protests, Impact of Social Justice Movements

*Interesting that, even as he iconizes Kennedy, Stone decries the Eisenhower myth that’s been spun around his farewell address, which so many “progressives” take as a sincere warning against “the military industrial complex”, but obviously that’s in direct contradiction to his administration’s actions around the world.

It may have been an expression of a career military man’s aversion to having “civilians” – namely, corporations – wielding great influence in what he felt was the province of the military, but that’s supposition on my part.

I’d really like to hear an informed view of his intent.

As for Stone’s assassination assertions, they may be on target, but the fact that he has such an emotional investment in the victim gives me pause in accepting them on faith.

Not that I give any credence to the counter narrative.

Again, let’s hear from a more objective source.

David Gregory’s Curious History of the Tea Party

*Think about what the corpress says about those who actually do decry “the unholy alliance between business and government that is polluting the country”

Or that “Washington and Wall Street are in bed together, colluding for power and profit at the expense of the little guy”

Or “an elite Washington–New York establishment that lies to the public to cover for policies that enrich the wealthy and strengthen the powerful.”

That is, when they deign to say anything about them at all.

Whose Obamacare Stories Are Worth Telling?

*According to this AP piece

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/11/02/obamacare-insurance_n_4201750.html?utm_hp_ref=business&ir=Business

Some folks won’t be paying “a little more”, or “wind up with better policies as a result”.

Now, this is the AP, and we can reasonably surmise why there’s this focus on the three stories included.

But I think it points to a tendency among “progressives”, or whichever term you care to use, to dismiss what may be factual intel, however ill intended and selectively revealed, simply because it emanates from some right bastards (using a bit of Britspeak there, but it works the other way, as well), or from a corpress outlet that ably serves its masters.

And I think that diminishes the ability to righteously denounce the outright propaganda that suffuses so much of mainstream media discourse.

Now, I don’t know if these situations are anomalies, but even if they are, these are real people being harmed, and it points to the enormous contradictions inherent in the ACA, which was promulgated not simply to preempt a drive for true universal health care, but also to create an antagonistic association in much of the public mind with same, with “gummint run medicine”.

I think that this article might be shining some light on one of the tactics in that attempt.

If these stories are indeed indicative of the experience of many others, and even if they’re not, resentment may well build toward those who are being substantially subsidized, or covered under Medicaid expansion.

“Divide and conquer” is a time tested method of blunting solidarity between the middle class and the poor, and I think it’s reasonable to suppose it’s at work in this instance.

And lest you conclude that this is an ideological screed against the ACA, regardless of its benefits for many millions (as it concommitantly leaves many millions more up the proverbial creek)

I’m among those beneficiaries.

(I would be more so if the POS that occupies the Wisconsin governor’s mansion hadn’t “declined” the expansion of Medicaid in the state.)

So I’m keeny cognizant of whatever good may come from this

But that doesn’t impair my awareness of the much greater good that’s being subverted by it.

And even as we put the lie to the lies of the reactionaries regarding the ACA

We can’t lose sight of that fact

And the facts that illuminate it.
