Growing Up Black in American Apartheid – Glen Ford on Reality Asserts Itself pt1
On Reality Asserts Itself with Paul Jay: Glen Ford, Executive Editor of Black Agenda Report, tells his story as a red-diaper baby, growing up facing racism in the North living with his white activist mother, and living in the Deep South with his black deejay father

FAIR Blog
NYT Benghazi Bombshell: They Reported It Last Year Too

*I’m not sure why complicity is conflated with incompetence here.

Editors – who serve the interests of their employers – choose what to give prominence. They could have given this narrative the visibility it merited, but chose to let reactionary talking points frame the story, as is the case ad nausem.

So it has nothing to do with not “paying very close attention” to the former

And everything to do with consciously “amplif[ying]” the latter.

To argue otherwise is to imply that the countless repetitions of this pernicious pattern over the years is somehow the result of a sort of institutional Alzheimer’s.

We can have varying views of just why this occurs

But we can’t deny that it does, can we?

Orwellian or a Blunt Tool?: Conflicting Rulings on NSA Spying Set Up Likely Supreme Court Showdown

*Of course this is being “abused” by “this administration”.

And when documenting crimes such as animal abuse on farms can be labeled “terrorism”, the term loses all meaning, doesn’t it?

Not that even the employment of that perverted definition is necessary for you to be targeted.

Glenn Greenwald: The NSA Can “Literally Watch Every Keystroke You Make”

*I keep making this point, because it remains germane

Why is the ultimate rationale for this so rarely discussed?

The rulers realize their grip on power is in peril as the house of cards they’ve constructed collapses.

This is but one tool wielded, along with the militarization of the police and the criminalization of dissent, in seeking to ensure their control over us.

Is that a conspiracy theory?

I’d call it a conspiracy fact, if empiricism means anything.

If Snowden Returned to US for Trial, All Whistleblower Evidence Would Likely Be Inadmissible
by Trevor Timm

*This constant reiteration that Manning, Snowden et alia “did not harm the United States” is akin to the recitation of a religious mantra with no thought as to its meaning.

What precisely does it mean?

What is “the United States” in this context?

What are its “interests”?

In order for their acts to have import, they must perforce do harm to *something* that in turn does harm to us, mustn’t they?

We need to be acutely cognizant of how those in power persuade the populace that their well being is inextricably bound up with our own, that their enemies are ours.

Indigenous Groups Win Right to Seize Chevron’s Canadian Assets over $18 Billion in Amazon Pollution

Would it harm either’s career (and pocketbook) to lose? They can continue to claim innocence, that they’re been unjustly maligned by these big bad corporations, and it might even enhance their street cred.

Maybe this is nonsense.

Majority of Americans: Invading Afghanistan Was ‘Wrong Thing to Do’
Poll also finds majority thinks US troops should now withdraw more quickly
by Sarah Lazare, staff writer
Common Dreams

*As much as I’d like to think that this indicates some moral recalibration, my empiric sense won’t allow me to do so.

As with Vietnam, public opposition has little to do with Afghan death and suffering, or the violation of international law in attacking a nation for a criminal act perpetrated by some of its residents (not to excuse it in any way, but ostensibly in retaliation for a far worse totality of acts committed against those the attackers claimed to avenge).

The language is problematic. The invasion and occupation is termed a “failure”, not of morality, but of strategy.

Which begs the question

What if all had gone according to plan?

(For the Afghans, of course, the horrific results would’ve been much the same.)

What would the polls say if that had transpired?

Regardless, the lessons seem to never sink in, do they? If the fear button is pressed hard enough, historical amnesia will once again infect the body politic

And Joe McDonald’s ode to war fever will remain as apt as ever.

Lastly, do you think there’s really a “debate” going on within the administration over the value of Snowden’s revelations

Or is it concerned with whether to coopt, or incarcerate him?

Patrick Cockburn: U.S. Turns Blind Eye as Saudis Fund Jihadists in Syrian Conflict

*Don’t you think you might have wanted to talk about just why the West and the corpress are mute about Saudi funding of jihadi groups?

I’m no expert, but couldn’t it be indicative of how “terrorism” is used as a boogeyman to stoke the fear necessary to justify empire building and maintenance, but when confronting it might interfere with those designs, it is conveniently ignored?

Those in power make calculations as to how to best perserve and expand that power, and if you are aware that that is always their primary goal, then the seeming contradictions of their actions start to make more sense.

So I’d have liked to have seen an analysis based on that premise here.

Somehow I don’t believe the Times and the rest of the corpress would cover that in quite the same fashion.

Obamacare Website = Iraq War, Now with Bill Kristol

*I’d say that the ACA’s woes will have a greater political impact on Dear Misleader’s “legacy” than the Iraq War has had on Dear Leader’s.

“Obamacare”‘s sideline has never been filled with corpress cheerleaders as Iraq’s invasion and occupation was.

I think Bush’s political fortunes were much more heavily influenced by economic factors than those related to the Iraq War not going according to script.

(For the US. For Iraqis [and more broadly, Afghans, Pakistanis and other folks in the crosshairs of empire building], it went precisely as planned – death and destruction.)

But that said, who creates the conditions for “political fallout”?

The same elite media that pontificates on who is a victim of it, who are the gatekeepers of “conventional wisdom”.

Of course, the ACA *is* largely a piece of shit. I’m saying that as someone who’s having to deal with it. It leaves millions uninsured and underinsured or overcharged, it’s a profit funnel for the “health” industry, and its sins will make the struggle for true universal healthcare that much more difficult through its association with “gummint-run healthcare” in much of the public mind, aided and abetted by those self same MSMers.

But imagine the bile spewed its way if it actually was what we need, and have a right to?

The Secret History of How Cuba Helped End Apartheid in South Africa

*We can talk of this history, and it’s important to know it.

But let’s not pretend that Cuba, then or now, is a bastion of freedom and democracy. There are deep contradictions between its stated principles and its actual policies.

That can be said without giving any moral credence to US actions against Cuba, which have resulted in the death and suffering of many of its people.

And I would argue that it must be said, for to ignore those contradictions only gives those determined to undermine the very real gains made by the Cuban people over the last half century an opportunity to point out our own hypocrisy.

Credibility of the Ruling Elite is Being Shredded – Chris Hedges on Reality Asserts Itself pt2
On RAI with Paul Jay, Chris Hedges says that while people are disgusted with the centers of power, unless there is a constructive alternative, any eruption will be nihilistic and could be fascist

*Hedges may be right that change will begin at a local level, but that certainly can’t happen in isolation.

There must be some national network in which those engaging in these struggles are learning from each other, as well as some broader component that is spreading these ideas to the larger population in order to plant the seeds not just in community gardens, but in the vast fields of national opinion.

Beyond that, this has to be seen as a global struggle, with much to learn from those in other parts of the world, such as Greece, who have progressed far beyond us Yanks as far as being able to mobilize large segments of their populations.

And we might have a thing or two to show them, as well.

Shared knowledge, and shared support, are vital.

And if you don’t believe the surveillance state isn’t fully aware of that …

Perhaps an encapsulating aphorism would be

Solidarity must be shoreless

Borderless

And fearless.

How’s that?

*There’s an issue beyond civilian deaths.

Due process is deep sixed for those who are targeted.

It’s often helpful to put things in a different context.

The US shelters any number of terrorists on its soil.

Does that give another nation the right to attack?

It’s a supreme irony that when Cuba sent agents to Florida to surveil murderers like Bosch and Carriles, they were arrested, convicted and incarcerated, while the terrorists remained free.

Seymour Hersh: Obama “Cherry-Picked” Intelligence on Syrian Chemical Attack to Justify U.S. Strike

*I think Hersh has a justified rep for getting the facts right, but I have questions about his interpretation of them in this instance.

Given what the US has done with no legal, and certainly no moral, justification, why would there now be enough pushback from within the gummint to dissuade Dear Misleader from ordering military action (read “death and destruction”)?

Why would he care if there’s no evidence to connect the Syrian regime to the sarin attacks?

Ask the ghost of Saddam, among others, about “evidence”.

So while Hersh may have the straight skinny on the feigned intel, I’d like to hear an alternative assessment of just what led to the hold off on an attack.

NYT Takes Mandela’s Death as a Chance to Mock His Fight to Free His Country

*Despite this example, the corpress coverage I’ve seen in general has sought to iconize a “safe” Mandela, just as has been done with Martin Luther King, while “alternative” reporting and commentary has largely overlooked the profound failures that marked his presidency in favor of a sort of reverse mirror of the MSM’s glorification of him.

What we need is an honest assessment of the man and his actions.

Neither hagiography from any angle, nor dismissal that overlooks the very real accomplishments of his life, serves us well.

I think the Real News segments above put Mandela’s impact in better perspective.

Soweto Activist: While Mandela Helped Build “The New South Africa,” Struggle Continues for Many

I guess they can cross it off the list, and continue with the deification.

But this shouldn’t be about hagiography, or blanket condemnation.

It should be about honestly assessing his acts, so that we might learn vital lessons from them.

Obamacare as a ‘Big Government’ Failure

*”If a bunch of private companies were competing … they would pay a price if the website crashed and people would go to another company.”

That’s certainly the way it works with defense contracting, isn’t it?

Cost overruns, faulty technology …

How many corps that have “[paid] a price” for their ineptitude and malfeasance?

And not mentioned here is the fact that this site was designed and built in large measure by private contractors, as well.

So gummint is at fault here, as is so often the case, not for “disrupt[ing] the normally smooth workings of the private sector”

But for letting the private sector, with its “profit uber alles” mentality, hoover up taxpayer dollars in exchange for a shoddy product

Which is one thing they are extremely proficient at doing.
