TRNN Debate: Is Obamacare In the Interest of Workers?
In round two of our debate with Dr. Margaret Flowers and economist Dean Baker, we discuss whether CBO’s prediction that Obamacare will trigger reduction of work hours will negatively affect workers

*We have to recognize that the ACA, like reformism in general, is designed to blunt the drive for transformation – in this case true universal care – by positing itself as the only option aside from the current system, as well as creating in the public mind a distaste for “gummint run healthcare” due to its convoluted and incomplete nature.

We also must be cognizant of the fact that “reform” always tells someone

“Sorry … there’s only so much room in the boat.”

How do you feel if you’re one of the millions to whom that message is directed?

I say all this as someone who Baker would likely hold up as a beneficiary of this program. I pay a silver plan premium of less than five bucks a month, with a yearly out of pocket cap of $500, and as a result, I can finally get some things looked at before they get worse.

Of course, as Flowers points out, I have to make sure that services are covered under my plan.

So, I guess I’m a “winner” in some sense here.

But there should be no losers, and the experience in those nations with universal care – at least before austerity fever struck the industrialized world – proves that there’s no reason for there to be.

Not that those situations are nirvana, but they are inclusive, and any less than wealthy Yank who’d prefer this bait and switch to them is in dire need of psychiatric care

Which they wouldn’t have trouble obtaining elsewhere.

And it really bothers me that Baker engaged in what I consider an ad hominem swipe at Flowers, with his “die in the street” remark.

I didn’t hear her suggest folks shouldn’t avail themselves of what’s available under the ACA, as I have.

She said we can, and we must, do better, by continuing to fight for what so many in other countries already enjoy

And I’d say we have to go beyond that

Toward nirvana.

One final note

The US was a signatory to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights over sixty years ago.

Article 25 states

“Everyone has the right to a standard of living adequate for the health and
well-being of himself and of his family, including food, clothing, housing
and medical care and necessary social services, and the right to security
in the event of unemployment, sickness, disability, widowhood, old age or
other lack of livelihood in circumstances beyond his control.”

Of course, it doesn’t have the force of law.

Its implementation depends on the moral integrity of our “leaders”

And I’m sure you all grasp the implications of that prerequisite.

The Bolivian Transportation Sector, Regional Integration and the Environment
by Nate Singham

*There will always be a tension in developing countries between environmental responsibility and conventional economic growth, especially with regard to fossil fuel development.

It’s a complex question, stating the obvious, and requires sensitivity to both the necessity for protecting our planet and its people, and reducing the dire levels of poverty that pervade so many of these countries.

But without a longer term vision for moving away from a system that will always promote these dilemmas, we’re just whistling past the graveyard

A quite literal one, if we ignore the apocalypse looming before us.

Obama to Visit Saudi Arabia, Key Source of Funding for Growing Jihadi Militarism in Middle East

*I don’t claim to be an expert, but I don’t think you have to be one to see that “terrorism” has always been a red herring for the expansion of empire abroad, and repression at home.

Whatever the role of the US in 9/11 – from exploitation of “a new Pearl Harbor” to outright facilitation of it – it’s clear that it served to bring a new boogeyman into the public’s consciousness, to replace “The Red Menace”, and justify state terror against those in other lands, and the ramping up of the police state at home.

So, yes, the US and the West want to control those elements of the other terrorism that impinge on their interests

But they also serve a useful role in advancing them.

If “another 9/11” occurs – and perhaps that depends on whether Saudi Arabia and the other backers of these jihadis see it as advantageous – you can be certain that the US won’t do what’s necessary to prevent such tragedies

Namely, ending its own horrors, which create the rationale for them

But will seek to instill further fear among Americans, promoting a blind acceptance of crusades abroad

And persecutions at home.

Georgia Activists Confront GOP Rejection of Medicaid as Moral Mondays Spread Across South

*I’ve never understood how someone can represent the ACA as “affordable healthcare for all”, when millions are excluded from its benefits.

I say that as someone who now has medical insurance due to it.

Not a word about true universal healthcare, and no question from the hosts about that contradiction.

Medicaid expansion is crucial, but let’s not pretend that it’s anywhere close to what we need

And let’s hope that this movement doesn’t devolve into little more than a campaign appendage for a morally bankrupt Democratic Party, as happened here in Wisconsin.
