Is Financialization Necessary for a Modern Economy? – Costas Lapavitsas on Reality Asserts Itself (5/8)
On Reality Asserts Itself, Mr. Lapavitsas says modern capitalism requires financialization, but productive growth in the interests of the majority of people does not

*This is useful intel, but what I’d really like to see examined is just why there’s a need for profit, period, to create the conditions for the production of the goods and services that we really need.

The idea of profit’s based on the notion that people have to have some wealth-based incentive to do … well … anything.

Is that true?

If we all could have what we need to live a dignified life, and we would have that only if we all contributed to creating that life for ourselves and others, according to our talents

Wouldn’t that be incentive enough?

Why does profit – why does even money, a medium of exchange – enter into the equation?

Talk about that.

Anti-Austerity Left Wins in Greece, But Far-Right Rises across Europe
In European Parliament elections one thing is clear… Europeans are dissatisfied with status quo
by Jon Queally, staff writer
Common Dreams

*I consider the far right, including fascists, to be the shock troops for austerity. In Ukraine, of course, they’re part of a government that is pushing that policy, and in Greece, despite the jailing of leaders, they had been given free reign by the austerity administration to commit the crimes that led to that incarceration.

So how does this double game work, of opposing Euroausterity, while aligned with it in at least some states?

I’d like to see a clear analysis of that, soon.

TRNN Replay: Untold History: The Rise and Fall of a Progressive Vice-President of the USA
Pt.3 Peter Kuznick, co-author with Oliver Stone of the “Untold History of the United States”, discusses the ’44 Democratic Convention coup that dumped VP Henry A. Wallace, the man who as President would have opposed the cold war

*Kuznick, Stone and many other historians and artists like good stories, and they like heroes to populate those stories.

And a penchant for creating heroism tends to deflect a desire to explore contradictions.

I try to be an empiricist, and nothing I’ve seen in the context of American politics leads me to believe that Wallace was the shining knight he’s portrayed to be.

That doesn’t mean he was a charlatan. It means that, despite being portrayed as a “visionary” willing to act on his beliefs, anyone who could attain the level of political office that Wallace did perforce would fall short of doing so.

Certainly a Wallace presidency would have differed from Truman’s. The question is just how much difference, and in what areas, would there have been?

I’m not an expert on this era, and perhaps what I’ve witnessed in the half century and counting that I’ve been around is constricting my ability to accept a more hopeful narrative of a more hopeful time.

But I’d like to hear from someone with bona fides on this subject who is less inclined toward heroic storytelling, and more disposed toward an examination of the complexity and contradictions that exist on such a stage.

You may construe this as cynicism

But I think I have ample reason to distrust the stability of pedestals.

*Of course I don’t know the details, but on principle I’ve never been comfortable with the rationale for withholding intel in situations like this.

Firstly, any physical harm can be avoided by simply leaving the country in question.

Secondly, what “mission” is being jeopardized? Isn’t it one that itself can or does lead to death and destruction?

There may be rare exceptions, but in almost every instance, what revelation harms is the imperial project

And damaging its efficacy – barring extraordinary and verifiable circumstances, not unsubstantiated claims of dire consequences

TRNN Replay: Untold History: Early US Imperialism, Hitler, Roosevelt, The Spanish Civil War
Pt.2 Peter Kuznick, co-author with Oliver Stone of Untold History of the United States, discusses Roosevelt’s attitude towards Hitler and the Soviet Union

*People like Kuznick are just incapable of seeing clearly what their own eyes reveal, and what they admit to some degree with their own words.

Saint Franklin will never descend the pedestal they’ve placed him on, no matter how many facts are arrayed against such hagiography.

As Kuznick himself states, FDR saved capitalism

And that was his mission. The only way to do that was to save it from itself, to add gummint intervention as a salient feature of the capitalist project, to buy off the forces threatening to end it.

(I was naive enough early on to think that Dear Misleader’s mission was similar, if not on the same scale.

I was disabused of that notion in short order.)

Roosevelt may have been a “good cop”

But cops of any kind have a job to do.

And it has nothing to do with justice.

*Until the social goods that define a dignified life no longer bear a bar code

The Guantánamo “Suicides” Revisited: Did CIA Hide Deaths of Tortured Prisoners at Secret Site?

*I don’t think the term “mistake” is appropriate here, do you?

Isn’t it likely that the CIA didn’t care whether these persons were “terrorists” (a term that itself is often inappropriate to describe certain actions), that they cast a wide net in which anyone caught would be induced to become an informant?

In fact, doesn’t it make sense that those who might not resist being “turned” to the same degree due of a lack of allegiance to a cause might be easier to do so?

If you don’t release such individuals, that doesn’t speak to the realization of a “mistake”, does it?

Of course, beyond all that, no one deserves such treatment, and it confounds any notion of simple humanity that anyone could conceive of and carry out such sadistic acts.

That we pay for this horror show should sicken the souls of every American.

I’m not so naive as to believe that to be the case.

How Kidnapped Nigerian Schoolgirls Became Propaganda for Imperial Policy
Glen Ford: Western intervention aims to make region malleable to neoliberal economic policies and further militarize the continent

*It’s amazing the moral and logical contortions so many liberals and progressives go through to justify “humanitarian intervention”, blithely ignoring the history of the exploitation of that pernicious rationale.

Those who are sincere about the fate of these children – we’re not talking Samantha Power here – have switched off the left side of their brain (questionable theory, I know) in order to mindlessly contend that “We have to do SOMETHING!”

Well, “we” did, as Ford makes plain.

The US helped create the conditions for this tragedy, and its further involvement will likely ensure it ends tragically

Not just for the immediate victims, but for the people of Nigeria, the region, and the continent.

The 60th Anniversary of Brown v. Board of Ed in the Shadow of ‘School Choice’
Glen Ford: The corporate education reform movement has exacerbated inequities in public schools in the name of civil rights

*As someone who grew up in an apartheid educational and societal system, who graduated from one of those “segregation academies” in Mississippi

It revulses me to see the cause of “civil rights” invoked to justify nothing less than the destruction of anything that could be positively associated with the concept of public education.

This is race, but it’s also class, war. The “workforce” of the 21st century is to be made up of drones – those who have jobs – and the remaking of education in this country is designed to facilitate that goal.

The wall of a new, if not absolute, apartheid based on race, and class – and gender – is being raised

FCC Holds Meeting on Net Neutrality Rules: Chairman Meets Protesters

Did CIA’s Fake Polio Vaccination Program in Pakistan Help Fuel a Global Health Emergency?

*I know I’ve said it a number of times before, but I think it bears repeating that the US doesn’t want to “win” the GWOT ™.

“TERRORISM!” provides its rationale for empire expansion. It certainly wants to manage the situation, but having a boogeyman to promote fear is essential to its strategy.

And, not that it would make any difference morally, but I cannot believe this ruse was necessary to locate bin Laden.

The man was hiding in plain sight, and with the resources at its disposal, that the CIA didn’t know precisely where he was, and had known for years, beggars belief, to my mind.

This may well have been a field test to determine its efficacy, with its foreseeable consequences of no concern to its creators.
