Racing to a Dead End – Heiner Flassbeck on Reality Asserts Itself (2/5)
Mr. Flassbeck, former head of UNCTAD, says current economic policy is heading back to the 1930s, a race to the bottom, they have no solution at all, we will end up again in trade wars or other wars

*”Rational” to me means a system that ensures a dignified standard of living for each and every person on this planet.

By that definition, capitalism can never be rational, for it will always exploit someone, if history is any guide.

In the quarter century or so following World War II, most workers in Europe and the US achieved middle class status.

Most, but not all.

And that wealth was created in no small part by the exploitation of the peoples of the “developing world”, was it not?

You can regulate a profit system

You can make it more “rational”

But by its very essence it creates winners and losers.

The question is

Are we willing to accept that?

I don’t think the losers are.

*From the U.S. Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation:

The Israeli military has used Palestinian children to open bags it believed to be bomb-laden, held children in front of soldiers to prevent youth from throwing rocks, and forced children to enter homes believed to be rigged with explosives.”

I’m certain Schieffer is deeply chagrined that they’re forced to do so.

You should be ashamed of the unanimous passage of resolutions supporting Israel’s attacks on Gaza.

Israel — armed at U.S. expense and emboldened by U.S. support — has been attacking people trapped in Gaza, a densely populated strip of land between Israel and the sea. In Gaza, the Israeli military has killed hundreds, wounded thousands, and bombed hospitals, schools, media outlets, children, the injured and the elderly.

As a constituent, I demand you cease supplying weapons to Israel and to stop providing the Israeli government with immunity from legal consequences for its actions.

You and all the other fine “liberals” in Congress have shown the hollowness of your proclaimed fealty to the cause of human rights with this cowardly and complicit action.

Would it have been in the case of South Africa?

Communists have fought and died in the cause of justice around the world. They have been a vital part of the labor, civil rights and other struggles for decades, and to not acknowledge that is at some level to legitimize the propaganda spewed by the Kochs and other exploitocrats.

A system based on profit and competition (in the sense of being antagonistic to cooperation, not in the sense of being free of monopolism, obviously) can never provide the basis for economic justice, for ensuring that every single person on this planet has what they need to live a life of dignity, free from want.

But aren’t these the same food companies that profit from the very practices that organics stand in opposition to? That they seek to greenwash themselves with “natural” and “organic” products that are such in name only isn’t an indictment of organic agriculture, but of their manipulative and hypocritical acts.

I’m certain these corporations, while marketing these shams, are also sponsoring the propaganda exposed here. It’s analogous to conventional energy corps touting “green” initiatives while spending huge amounts to thwart any real shift to renewables.

It’s a facet of the story that Hamerschlag and Malkan should have included among the other salient points they make.
