Hillary Clinton is Just Plain Wrong on GMOs
by Katherine Paul, Ronnie Cummins

*No argument here

(Aside from the naive assumption that Clinton “believes we must address global warming”, if “address” is meant to mean actually do something serious about it)

But this congenital use of her first name smacks of sexism, don’t you think?

Ask yourself whether “Barack” or “Barry” would have been incessantly employed if Dear Misleader had been the subject?

So call her “Clinton”

Hell, call her “Madame Mayhem”

But don’t let your incontestable animus toward her literally sickening shilling for Frankenfarming lead you down the path of distaff demeaning.

Victory Declared as Supermarket Standoff Ends With Worker-Friendly CEO’s Return
“Never, in the history of people going to work, will so many people be so happy to punch the clock.”
by Deirdre Fulton, staff writer
Common Dreams

*This is a victory, in that workers were able to affect the actions of a large company, but I think it needs to be placed in perspective.

Depending on the benevolence of a very rich person is always a dicey proposition. Artie T. may have more humanity than most in his income bracket, but I’d rather depend on my fellow workers to have my back than someone who today may see decent wages and working conditions as “a good business model”, but who might change his mind tomorrow, no doubt “reluctantly”, due to “the current business climate”.

Workers need to be organized. A democratic, principled union is the strongest guarantee that what seems a respectful relationship with management now doesn’t evaporate down the bottom line.

How to Save the Life of the Next Michael Brown
We all must build a common understanding of race, become aware of the role we play in upholding systems of oppression, and get comfortable with vulnerability.
by Camisha Jones

*As a white boy who grew up in apartheid Mississippi in the ’60s, I’m keenly aware that I will always be a recovering racist, and that it will be incumbent upon me to continually examine my thoughts and actions concerning people of color.

That’s a very different proposition from “white guilt”. It’s an acknowledgement of an immutable reality, one I don’t feel any guilt over inhabiting

The Battle for Justice in Ferguson Runs through the Soul of the Democratic Party
TRNN’s Jaisal Noor speaks with Ferguson residents, activists and politicians about the future of the movement sparked by the killing of Michael Brown

*I think by now it should be clear that the Democratic Party has no soul.

And while it does want “the black vote”, it doesn’t want to give disenfranchised folks of any color much of a reason to go to the polls.

That’s evident by its pathetic response to Republican legislatures passing law after law to make voting as arduous as possible for them, in the name of combating nonexistent “voter fraud”.

Both parties want a truncated electorate, which allows for a constricted political “debate”, such as it is.

That, of course, gives the heavy duty donors that much more bang for the buck

The Powers Behind The Islamic State
Investigative journalist Nafeez Ahmed gives specific examples of how Saudi, Qatari, and American interests have supported the group formerly known as ISIS, and what the global community can do now to reign them in

*There seems to be an underlying naïveté present here, even as the cogent facts to the contrary are presented, that somehow the US and the West, realizing their miscalculations, will rectify them by “doing the right thing”.

What historical precedents can be cited for such a scenario?

South Africa? After staunchly supporting apartheid for decades, until that system became untenable, a shift was made to coopt much of the leadership of the opposition, and foment a facade of democracy while ensuring essentially business (literally) as usual.

Just one example, of course.

When faced with a flawed strategy, the impulse of imperialism is not to suddenly get religion, but to find another heresy to hew to.

You could look it up.

The Pastor, the Police Officer and the Political Activist: Three Perspectives on Ferguson
by Sonali Kolhatkar

*I think it’s important to point out that the militarization goes beyond equipment, to the personnel.

Many cops are vets with experience in war zones, and they bring that experience, and the attitudes fostered by it, with them.

(And it should be noted that while most are white, many aren’t, and so we have to be aware that a more diverse police profile, though desirable, isn’t a panacea for this disease.)

These wars of empire produce a beneficial by product for the plutocracy, training the force that will be called on to protect it as more of our lives become more desperate.

Given that charge, perhaps a case can be made that it’s more of a primary purpose for them.

Is the Issue of Police Militarization a Distraction from Understanding Ferguson?
LEAP executive director Neill Franklin and Rev. Heber Brown III discuss how issues such as the war on drugs and poverty remain moot in the mainstream media coverage of Ferguson, Missouri

*It’s vital that we talk about just how to change the dynamic between the police and the community, and Brown’s and Franklin’s points at the end regarding community say so on which officers it wants among them, and that they come from that community, are well taken.

But I fear it’s for naught, for as Franklin noted earlier, policing is in large measure about social control, and as our situation becomes more desperate, and the exploitocracy moves to protect its privileges to an even greater extent, I have to think we’ll see this moving in the opposite direction.

Militarization will increase, and with it repression of anything deemed “a threat to law and order”, with the concomitant fear mongering to persuade the public to support the clamp down.

If we’re to avert that dire future, we need to give it the attention it merits

Now.

Or most all of us will be

But I don’t think there are enough people on this planet who get this, and are ready and willing to get down to doing something about it, to turn us around in time.

It’s not just a matter of sounding the alarm. Manufacturing consent, as Herman and Chomsky put it, is also about instilling inertia toward transformative change, of stripping us of the humanity, and the imagination, necessary to conceive of something other than the status quo.

That’s a tall and thick wall to break through

And those guarding it will do everything in their power to keep it standing, even at the cost of their own existence.

Such is the iron grip greed and power have on their raison d’etre.

Cops or Soldiers? Pentagon, DHS Helped Arm Police in Ferguson with Equipment Used in War

*What should always be a part of the discussion of police militarization is just why it’s happening, beyond the issue of racism, as profound as that is.

The Ferguson fallout may or may not result in some superficial scaling back of warrior copismo, but the infrastructure’s being put in place to protect the plutocracy from the public as things continue to fall apart.

No one should fool themselves about just what the future holds.

A police state of mind already exists, and as our lives become increasingly desperate, and anger at those who are responsible for our plight rises

Democracy Now!
Noam Chomsky: Israel’s Actions in Palestine are “Much Worse Than Apartheid” in South Africa

*I agree with Chomsky’s admonition to keep uppermost in mind the impact actions taken in support of the oppressed actually have on them

But when it comes to force, I’d like to know if he feels Palestinians shouldn’t defend themselves by the use of it in the face of such a vicious assault.

If that’s the case, I can’t accede to that view.

As for pragmatism generally, if it’s practiced as a step toward that “absolute justice”, acknowledging the reality at the moment, but always seeking to change it, then it makes moral sense to me.

At the same time, you’re telling someone – many someones – that their misery will continue, and their lives may not.

And you have the responsibility to be honest about that – about just what “pragmatism” means, hopefully for the short term.

But anything short of a commitment to the realization of true justice – which means to me in this case reparations, punishment for the perpetrators, and the creation of a single state with equal rights for all – even while fully aware of the distinct possibility that it may never come about

Is a failure of conscience, to my mind.

Wall Street to Planet Earth – Christopher Williams on Reality Asserts Itself (2/5)
Mr. Williams tells Paul Jay that to face up to the science of climate change, coal and oil conglomerates worth trillions of dollars have to keep their fossil fuels in the ground – something capitalism can’t allow

*Why is it that “alternative media” hardly ever talk about an alternative to capitalism?

There’s mention of it here, at the end, and I hope that’s expanded upon in the next segment

But we need to get fucking serious about just why the profit system cannot do what I believe anyone with a shred of humanity would desire

Provide what’s needed for every single person

Every single person

On this planet to live a dignified life.

If you say that’s impossible, explain your reasoning to those who will die because of it.

And once we acknowledge that, we have to get fucking serious about just what would replace capitalism, and how to do so.

I don’t have that answer, aside from the necessity of it being based in cooperation and community, rather than competition and selfishness.

But I’ll continue to ask the question

As long as my conscience compels me to.

Gaza Ceasefire: After 1,800+ Dead, What Led Israel to Stop the Assault — and What Comes Next?

*Finkelstein’s dead on, and more time should have been devoted to his analysis.

Often, an extended segment is posted online, and that should have been the case here.

Perhaps his time was limited, but if not, this was a missed opportunity to expose the program’s audience to a trenchant deconstruction of the lies propagated by Israel, the US and the corpress.

Study: Mainstream Environmental Groups Continue to Suffer from Lack of Diversity
New research finds that, while some gains have been made, white men continue to dominate the highest leadership positions of most green groups and hiring of people of color remains dismally low
by Sarah Lazare, staff writer
Common Dreams

*I think this is symptomatic of the lack of diversity of thought in mainstream environmental orgs, as evidenced by their reluctance to link such issues with a broader critique of the inherent injustice of the profit system.

Having women and persons of color in more visible roles doesn’t necessarily mitigate against that

See “Democratic Party”

But the fact that they aren’t in those positions indicates a worldview absent of an acknowledgement of how environmental degradation is part and parcel of the larger picture of the exploitation that ravages both planet and people.
