Gentrification and the Death of Black Communities
Gentrification – the displacement of Black and brown urban residents by more affluent whites – is a function of the same forces that emptied the cities of much of their white populations, generations ago: the movement of capital. Capital wants the cities back, and clears spaces for whites. “The system is stacked in favor of moneyed interests and white people.”

On Reality Asserts Itself, Mr. Appy says that presidents Kennedy and Johnson pursued the Vietnam war largely to prove the U.S., and themselves personally, had the “courage” to wage war

*Kennedy and Johnson were the quintessential Cold War liberals, tossing crumbs to the masses here while dropping cluster bombs on the masses there.

Their legacy lives on in the vicious “virtuousness” of “humanitarian intervention”, where to “aid” other peoples is inextricably bound up with the license to blow them to bits.

“America Does Bad Things for Good Reasons” – Christian Appy on RAI (2/5)
On Reality Asserts Itself, Mr. Appy, author of “American Reckoning: The Vietnam War and Our National Identity”, discusses how before direct American military involvement in Vietnam, the US financed almost 80 percent of the cost, so, in effect, France was serving almost as an American mercenary

*Will we ever rid ourselves of the political mythology that Ike was ever anything other than a literally bloody imperialist?

How many seemingly intelligent persons have quoted his farewell address to indicate other?

He was a military man, and my view is that he was simply warning that the military, not the profiteers (though he wouldn’t label them as such), should call the shots when it came to its deployment, and not merely be hired guns for whatever corporations thought would boost profits.

Of course, almost always there would be no conflict in that context, but Eisenhower desired Pentagon primacy over the business boys when there was.

To ignore his actions outlined here in an effort to bolster antiwar sentiment by transforming this “revered figure” into some sort of peacenik is intellectually dishonest, wilfully or not, and should be removed from the realm of political rhetoric.

The Climate Change Fight Cannot Be Won with White Liberal America Alone
Environmental advocacy must start representing the country we live in – a country where Asian and Latino families are the fastest growing populations
by Raúl Grijalva

*The issue really isn’t who’s part of the movement and its leadership, but whether the movement and its leadership are fighting for us all.

I could care less if Sierra has a black president. The country does, and what has that done for black folks?

If there’s a profound commitment to those most affected by environmental injustice, the organizations involved in that struggle will naturally be diverse.

Grijalva’s correct in saying there isn’t

And so they aren’t.

But a leader’s skin color only matters when it reflects the demands of the community they hail from, and not an empty gesture to identity politics.

“America Does Bad Things for Good Reasons”: the Vietnam War and American Exceptionalism – Christian Appy on RAI (1/5)
On Reality Asserts Itself, Mr. Appy, author of “American Reckoning: The Vietnam War and Our National Identity”, discusses growing up with a broad faith that America is always an indispensable and invincible force for good in the world – and the seeds of his disillusionment with Americanism

*I’m around the same age as Appy, and I wish I had a clearer recollection of how I came to reject all the patriotic propaganda of life in the Deep South in the ’60s.

It may be that my religious faith at the time played a major role. I took the teachings of “Jesus” (or whomever actually was responsible for them) to heart, and perhaps early on I could discern the hypocrisy around me, of those who attended all white churches and made sure black folks “knew their place”.

By applying that moral certitude, that aversion to dishonesty, to the wider inequities and ininquities of life in these here United States, I suppose my eyes were pried open even further, although I had to make the progression from “liberal” to “progressive” to whatever you care to call me now before I could claim to be truly liberated from the delusion of American exceptionalism.

Call it moral mathematics. Two plus two had to equal four, or I couldn’t accept the answer offered.

It’s a theory, anyway.

*I’d like to know more about why the establishment parties and politicians like Kenny supported equality, since it has nothing to do with enlightenment on their part.

I’d guess that, as is the case in the US, there are corporate entities that have determined that it’s good business to appear gay friendly. On the employee front, it’s no skin off their nose (or loss off their balance sheet) to do so, and it’s good HR strategy. 300,000 Celebrate Beatification of Salvadoran Archbishop Romero, 35 Years After U.S.-Backed Murder

*You have to ask, where was Francis when these horrors were being committed?

Beyond that, the church has lost ground in Latin America through its support of dictatorships and authoritarian regimes. The beatification of Romero is part of the PR strategy to regain the trust of the “flock”.

Globally, all the pretty talk of “uplifting the poor and downtrodden” serves the same purpose. Francis was selected to be the front man for the campaign.

Some in the hierarchy aren’t pleased, but those with the upper hand at the moment realize the need for a more “populist” approach to regain relevancy in the 21st century.

That it has as much substance to it as Clinton’s “conversion to the faith” is something I dearly hope will become abundantly apparent very soon.

The Global African: The State of Black Workers & Violence in Burundi
Telesur’s The Global African explores the state of black workers in the U.S. & the turmoil in Burundi

*As long as there’s no class analysis of the nature of work, and as long as we place work in the context of “jobs”, or working for the wages another pays us, inequity will exist.

Solidarity among all workers is the only way we can amass the power to change the exploitative nature of employment.

Our sense of humanity compels us to follow our conscience, regardless of the odds. Many have stood against the most brutal and vicious forces with no expectation of conquering them.

They did so to remain true to their principles, with the realization that to do other would negate their very existence.

We cannot overcome without that understanding, and we may not with it.

But we will have given our lives meaning, and that to me is what this whole mishegas is about.

Scheer and Hedges: They Know Everything About You (4/7)
A debate emerges between Bob Scheer and Chris Hedges on whether the state can reform its own surveillance practices and whether it can be held accountable by appealing to constitutional principles

*The Constitution is akin to the Bible, or the Qur’an, or the Talmud, or any other set of societal rules. It’s rife with contradictions, and the product of the hypocrises and prejudices, as well as the proclaimed virtues, of its authors.

While at times it has been a valuable shield against oppression, whether from government or corporate power, it has been repeatedly muted and rendered moot, as well.

It is not some immutable compendium of principles that we can depend on to protect us as we go about reforming the sociopolitical maladies that infest our body politic. Like those religious texts, it can be interpreted to the liking of those in power, leaving us naked before the lash.

In the end, we have to accept that, whatever benefit its invocation may have had in making what is meaningful but ultimately minor progress, it can’t stand as a bulwark against a state and the exploitocracy it serves, when their very survival is at stake. As things fall apart, they will pound away with their iron fists at anything they deem a threat to their existence.

We will learn apace that we can’t reform rot

We can only replace it.

And we will have to make the dire decision as to just what means are necessary to do so.

*This was a political trial and sentence, no different from Egypt or any other authoritarian regime.

The fix was in from the outset. There was no way the Obama administration was going to settle for anything less than death to show how “tough” it is on “terrorism”.

The terrible irony is that without that “toughness”, the victims of this horrible act might well have never suffered such a fate.

Sy Hersh Says Obama’s Version of Bin Laden Death Could Endanger Top Pakistani and Saudi Leaders
Seymour Hersh says by going public with a “fairytale” narrative of the murder of Bin Laden, President Obama broke an agreement with top Pakistani generals to hide the U.S. mission and Pakistani military complicity

*I couldn’t finish this. It’s so damn disjointed, with Hersh all over the map, and Jay doing little to make matters clearer.

Hersh’s admiration of Dear Misleader, and his view that torture and murder “make sense” to him is hard to stomach, as well.

So what happened?

I just have to believe that if bin Laden’s whereabouts weren’t known, that was a conscious decision to not know. When the politically opportune time came to kill him, he could be found easily enough.

And he would be killed. There was no information to be gleaned from interrogating him, no useful reason from a political standpoint to bring him to the US alive and have a trial, especially given what he might divulge regarding US and Saudi support for him over the years.

So make up a story of brave SEALS in a daring raid to take out Public Enemy Number One.

Wisconsin Activists to Continue Protests After Cop Avoids Charges in Killing of Tony Robinson

*I live in Madison, and have been following this case closely.

Unlike other such deaths, we don’t have a very clear sense of just what transpired between the officer and the deceased. Given that reality, it may be that Kenny’s actions were legally justified, but for Ozanne to make that declaration absent any substantiation other than Kenny’s account seems a biased judgment.

He could have stated that there’s insufficient evidence to charge the officer. That may or may not be the case, and I hope we’ll discover more on that matter over time.

But the larger issue is that regardless of the facts in this case, police – the state – have and will continue to oppress and kill “the other”, and the “law” will shield them from the just consequences of those actions, which include the violent and often militarized response to the community’s righteous anger over its treatment.

That reality will not change via “reform” or “training”, but through a transformation of power relationships in this state, this country, and around the world.

As long as the appeal to fear finds fertile ground in the hearts and minds of those, like me, who aren’t (as yet) directly affected by this police state of mind, it will be able to continue its rampage with impunity.

We must reject the drive to divide, see cleary at whose side we should stand, and move together to change a world rapidly devolving into dystopia.

Both our conscience, and our own best interest, demand it.

Former Baltimore Cop: You Can’t Enforce the Law by Breaking It
Stephen Tabeling says police who are hesitant in wake of Freddie Gray indictments don’t understand the law

*The coverage of policing here and elsewhere in “the alternative media” can be very contradictory and frustrating.

One moment it’s acknowledged that policing, with its roots in the slave patrols, is a form of repression, which will become blatantly apparent for more than “the other” as things fall apart

The next we get these segments on “training” and “reform”.

To me, it’s a waste of precious air time.

The “real news” is that, regardless of whether there are some cops that are better than others, the purpose of policing is to protect the power structure, and the media outlet that focuses on that is one that truly fulfills its mission.

Will Indictment Lead to Systemic Change in Baltimore?
TRNN senior editor Paul Jay and civil rights attorney A. Dwight Pettit discuss the implications of Marilyn Mosby’s Friday morning announcement

*Jay’s comment about Madison is naive, sad to say.

I live there. Madison has a reputation as a “progressive” city, with a gummint to match (of course, so does Oakland), and indeed there’s been much talk about supporting “peaceful” protest and so on.

But what’s happening there is simply another way to play the game. One method employed is the attempt to legitimate certain members of the black community, such as the head of the local Boys and Girls Club, while denigrating those less willing to play that game, like the Young Gifted and Black Coalition.

Of course, the local press is instrumental in this, and I’d suggest Jay check out some of the coverage around the killing of Tony Robinson to get a better understanding of how the media, politicians and the police have tried to frame this tragedy, and the reaction to it.

He might come away with a less laudatory assessment of local law enforcement.

Mainstream TV’s Attention to Property Destruction Overshadows Killing of Freddie Gray
TRNN’s Eddie Conway and Megan Sherman and Baltimore City firefighter Gary Nelson give the real account of the encounter between Baltimore youth and police on Monday and discuss the underlying conditions that produced it

*Some of the acts precipitated by the systemic economic, political and legal injustices that black folks have endured for centuries in this country are not productive, and should be critiqued as such. Many in those communities have done so, without playing into the “thug” narrative promulgated by the corpress and politicians appealing to worst instincts.

Of course, all “violence” on the part of the oppressed gets lumped together, doesn’t it? Smashing the windows of a cop car is equivalent to looting a liquor store. Motive becomes irrelevant in the effort to paint protest as “riot”.

And we should always be alert to the possibility of provocateurs, if history is any indication.

What is genuine, which no propaganda can eviscerate, is the rage that is borne of a visceral intimacy with injustice.

It may be inchoate

It may be destructive

Or it may be righteous and rationally directed

But it is all in reaction to an inhumanity that any “civilized society” worthy of the name would never countenance in its midst.
